Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has initiated an indigenous project called SWAYAM which is an acronym of ‘Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds’, which hosts MOOCs. The SWAYAM platform has been started with a view to providing access to the best quality learning resources across the country. Through SWAYAM student can virtually attend the courses taught by the best faculty and can access high quality reading resources. Though the courses are online, the students can participate in discussion forums through video conferencing or YouTube and can also appear in exam to earn academic grades. This aims at benefitting lifelong learners, students, teachers, researchers to use multimedia on anytime, anywhere basis for acquiring knowledge and skills. The basic concept is 3A’s ie., Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere can attend these courses.
In this regard, the Government of India has identified eight National Coordinators from School to Higher Education level for maintaining the quality of online courses. These eight National MOOC Coordinators are University Grants Commission (UGC), Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), IGNOU, NPTEL(National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) , NCERT, NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling), IIM Bangalore, and National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai. UGC has been given the responsibility of developing online courses for non-technology PG courses whereas CEC has been given non technology Undergraduate Courses. IGNOU, has been given the responsibility of certificate and diploma courses whereas NPTEL looks after technical/ engineering Under as well as Post graduate courses.
Besides SWAYAM, Swayam Prabha and e PG pathsagala are also digital initiatives of Government of India. Through SWAYAM Prabha, the curriculum based lectures in all subject areas are transmitted on 24 hours x 7days. The lectures of SWAYAM prabha could be viewed in the remotest part of India since these are being launched through GSAT-15 Satellite. There are 32 Direct to Home (DTH) channels which can be accessed by installing a Setup box worth Rupees fifteen hundred only. The lectures for competitive exam like JEE can also be accessed through IIT –PAL (Professor Assisted learning) Channel. For details one can visit to www. swayamprabha.gov.in.
ePG pathasahala is another initative in which video lectures, e content and self assessment of 77 different subjects can be accessed by the students and teachers of post graduate courses. These can assist learners to get the quality lecture notes and video lectures in their subjects. The details can be accessed from the https://epgp.inflibnet.ac.in.
These digital initiatives viz., SWAYAM, Swayam Prabha, e pg pathashala and UGC MOOCs introduced by Government of India would definitely give an opportunity to students as well as teachers to learn and update knowledge and skills and to strengthen these in the present competitive world of new challenges.
AWARENESS PROGRAMMES ON SWAYAM AND MOOCs FOR SWAYAM MENTORS
“The Awareness Programmes on SWAYAM and MOOCs” shall be organised in Multi Facility Computer Centre, Gram Geeta Bhavan, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Campus, Amravati Road, Nagpur at 11.00 am to 1.30 pm on 25th Jan, 2020. The affiliated colleges shall nominate a teacher as SWAYAM Mentor and shall ask him/her to register at the link given below for attending the awareness programme. The nominated teachers shall bring his/her nomination letter for attending the awareness programme.
