About us

The Department of Physics, RTMNU came into existence in 1963 along with other Science Departments for imparting post-graduate education (M. Sc. Degree) and for promoting cutting edge research. Department has successfully completed two level of DST-FIST and UGC-SAP. Each faculty of the department is actively engaged in research and has received funds from UGC, DAE, SERB, DST, DRDO, CSIR, IUAC, RUSA, UGC-DAE-CSR, RTMNU etc. Research activities of the Department are mostly focused on materials science research and have grown steadfastly since its inception, expanding into areas of functional materials for Luminescence, Solar Cells, Fuel Cell, batteries, Sensors and Energy Harvesting materials, Acoustics, and nanostructure Polymers as well as Theoretical Physics. Department is actively involved in R & D as well as consultancy project and has also collaborations with several R & D organization in the India e.g. IUC-DAE-CSR (Indore), RRCAT (Indore), NEERI (Nagpur), IISER (Pune), IISc (Bagalore) etc as well as outside the India with Penn State University, State College (USA) , Institute of Energy and Climate change, ForchunszentrumJulich GMBH, (Germany).

Syllabus

  • Choice based credit system has been introduced from the session 2015-16.
  • Complete course is of 2500 marks (100 credits) which are equally divided in four semesters
  • Seminars and dissertation are the important part of M. Sc. programme.

Programme specific Outcome

Programme specific outcome: After completion of course, the student will be to
PSOl: Understanding basic principles of Physics which are underlying a wide selection of physical phenomenon.
PSO2: Explore with current state-of-art in the selected area of Physics.
PSO3: lnculcate the habit to plan, design and execute new experiment. Analyze, interpret experimental result and write report on it.
PSO4: Assess the errors involved in an experiment work; searching out and adopting new methodology to reduce errors. Presents the experimental outcome in effective manner.
PSO5: After completing PG degree from this programme, they will be eligible to continue research at the higher degree (Ph.D.) level. They will be trained by experimental, computer programming and data interpretation programming skill and exposed to improve their employability in research and development, in scientific and engineering industries.
PSO6: Additionally, they will have necessary numerical and transferable skills to select general career choice such as accounting or computing

Masters Program (M.Sc.)

  • No. of students admitted in each session: 50
  • Duration - Two years (Four Semesters CBCS course)
  • Eligibility - B.Sc. with Physics as one of the subjects
  • Admission procedure: On the basis of merit and rules of the University
  • Specialization: Material Science, X-rays and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
  • Research Project at fourth semester
  • The reservation of seats is according to the Govt. of Maharashtra rules.

Ph.D. Programs

  • Guidance for the Ph.D. degrees is offered in current topic in Physics with national and social importance
  • Admission criteria for Ph.D.: Candidates who have qualified NET/SET or PET (Ph. D. Entrance Test of RTM Nagpur University) can apply for the registration to Ph. D. programme.
