Brief Introduction of the Department : The Department has been founded in 1968. The existing building has 1246.20 sq. m. built up area in the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Educational Campus, Amravati Road, Nagpur. The Department of Home Science is successfully running Post Graduate Courses in Food Science & Nutrition and Resource Management and M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in all specializations in Home Science. The Department has well equipped laboratories for Nutritional Biochemistry, Advanced Nutrition, Advanced Food Science and Ergonomics.

Career Prospects : The post graduate students of Home Science have ample opportunities in various fields of Food Science & Nutrition as well as Resource Management.

M. Sc. Food Science & Nutrition : This course of M. Sc. Food Science & Nutrition gives students the in-depth insight of the subjects in the areas of clinical nutrition, therapeutic nutrition & community nutrition. This course is aimed to make students aware about the techniques of Food Science & current trends in the field of nutrition. This course imbibes the importance & need of research in the minds of students. This course gives avenues to students in different fields to work as clinical nutritionist, dietitian, sports & gym nutritionist, media dietitian, government health departments, public health centers, counsellor/educator/consultant, food analyst, quality control officer, food inspector, nutritional research & development, data analyst & many more.

M. Sc. Resource Management : Resource Management students have following job opportunities such as a Manager in Consumer Goods, Retail Management Unit, Assistant to Human Resource Manager in Hotels and Companies, Interior Designer, House Planner for Different Income Group, Assistant to Architect, Front Office Manager, Receptionist, House Keeping Executives, Florist, Landscape Designer, Ergonomist, Women Entrepreneur, Event Planner as well as students can go into Research & Development.

The area of academics is also available for students who qualify the NET or SET examination for various posts in the affiliated Colleges and in the University. Also, students can enroll in the Department for their doctoral research work.

1. M.Sc. 30 + 6 (Gondwana University) As per University Norms For admission to the M.Sc. Home Science (Food Science and Nutrition) Semester I, a candidate shall have B.Sc. (Home Science), B.Voc. in Food Processing & Engineering /B.Sc. with Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, B.Sc. with Nutrition of any other statutory university recognized equivalent thereto. (Preference will be given to B.Sc. Home Science students.) 24+5 (Gondwana University) As per University Norms For admission to the M.Sc. Semester I in Resource Management, a candidate shall have offered B.Sc. (Home Science), M.A. (Home Economics), Bachelor of Interior Design (BID) of the university or of any other statutory university recognized equivalent thereto.
2. M.Phil. 20+1(Total number of seats: 21 The eligibility criteria for the admission to the M.Phil. Programme is purely on the basis of Merit. 20 seats are reserved for students of Nagpur University and 01 seat for other university. 50% on Merit basis & (50% for reservation) As per University Norms

Students are using computer laboratory with internet connectivity on regular basis. The Department has got internet connection which the students and faculty use regularly for their academic and research purposes.

  2. Department offers bone mineral density & body composition analysis free of cost for RTMNU employees.
  3. Every year, entrepreneurship-cum-health expo is organized in the department.
  4. Guest lectures & workshops are regularly conducted in the department.
  5. Annual social gathering, various competitions and sports events are regularly organized.
  6. Students prepare compost from waste in the department.
  7. Under N.S.S. unit of the department, tree plantation & shramadaan is regularly taken up.
  8. Students’ feedback about academic offering of the Department is taken every year.

Achievements of the Department

About 260 students have been awarded Ph. D. in all five specializations of Home Science, HMCT, Cosmetic Technology & Home Economics.

From 2014 till 2019, 120 research papers have been published in national & international journals by faculty members. Faculty members are editors/referees/reviewers for esteemed national and international journals, Ph. D thesis examiners for various Universities, appointed on various academic bodies of the University and other Universities. All faculties are life members of various academic and professional bodies.

Consultancy Services Offered

Department provides Diet Consultancy, Food Analysis Service, Housing Interiors and Landscape Design Service and Ergonomics Consultancy.

The provision of the assessment of body composition & bone mineral density is open for public on every Saturday from 10.00 am to 11.30 am. This provision is free of cost for RTMNU employees.

Expertise available in the Department

Expertise with respect to patient counseling, therapeutic nutrition, community nutrition & public health as well as food analysis for nutrients, housing interiors, landscape designing & ergonomics are available with the Department.

Alumni

Alumni Association of Dept. of Home Science is Non Financial but Functional since 2010. Golden Jubilee Alumni Meet of the Department was conducted on 26th November, 2017 with 104 alumni attended the event.

  • “Recipe Competition and Poster Competition” was held in the department on account of Nutrition Week Celebration on 06th August 2018. Students from various colleges in Nagpur and from Department itself participated in the competitions.
  • “Swacchta Pakhwada Abhiyaan” was celebrated in the department on 25th August 2018 under N.S.S. activity in which the documentary movie was shown to focus on the Importance of Health & Hygiene.
